Introducing STEMise Learn: going deep on STEM, one concept at a time
STEMise Learn is our gamified learning platform in the making: short interactive lessons, built on curriculum written by STEMise members, with XP and streaks that build real understanding one concept at a time.
Today we're sharing a first look at STEMise Learn, the edtech platform at the heart of STEMise Education. It's still in development, but the idea is set: a gamified learning platform — Duolingo-style, but for going deep on STEM.
Why build a learning platform
Everything STEMise runs comes from one belief: young people shouldn't just study STEM, they should build with it. Competitions, hackathons and chapters give students somewhere to build. STEMise Learn is meant to give them the foundations to start — the concepts they need, learned by doing rather than memorizing.
Lessons written by our members
Every lesson in STEMise Learn is based on curriculum made by STEMise members. The same students who compete in our olympiads, build at our hackathons and run our chapters write the lessons and activities — and STEMise Learn turns that curriculum into something any student can pick up and play.
That's deliberate. Students teaching students is how a culture spreads: the people who learned a concept by building with it are the best placed to explain it to the next person, in the way they wish someone had explained it to them.
How it works
Learning in STEMise Learn happens in short interactive activities instead of long readings. Students earn XP as they go and keep streaks alive day to day, so building understanding becomes a habit, one concept at a time.
One example: a meteorology activity where students drag each cloud family — cirrus, altostratus, nimbostratus, cumulonimbus and more — to the altitude band it forms in. Instead of reading that cirrus forms above 6,000 meters, you put it there yourself.
Part of STEMise Education
STEMise Learn is one of three STEMise Education programs, and it's built directly on another: the member-made curriculum, written by STEMise members, for STEMise members, that approved chapters already teach from. The third is hands-on STEM kits. Together they cover where a culture of STEM innovation starts: learning by building.
What's next
STEMise Learn is still in the making, and we'll share more here as it takes shape. In the meantime, you can see a preview of an activity on the STEMise Education page.
